India is accelerating its efforts to build a robust AI ecosystem, with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing the acquisition of 14,000 additional GPUs under the IndiaAI Mission. This move brings the total GPU count to over 32,000, according to a report by CNBC-TV18.
Describing the initiative as a transformative step, Vaishnaw emphasized the enduring role of artificial intelligence in India’s future: “This is a big change, and AI is here for good.” The mission is focused on making AI infrastructure more accessible, aiming to empower a broader base of innovators and developers.
The newly procured GPUs will support both large and small language model training and will be offered to eligible users at up to 40% reduced costs. Several companies—Netmagic Solutions (an NTT Communications firm), Cyfuture, Yotta Data Services, and Sify Technologies—have progressed in the second round of tenders. They join existing partners such as Jio Platforms, CtrlS Datacenters, Tata Communications, and NxtGen Cloud Technologies.
Highlighting the mission’s inclusive vision, Vaishnaw noted that AI capabilities should not be monopolized by a select few. Instead, the goal is to create an open, scalable AI infrastructure. Plans also include the development of open-source foundational models, further advancing India’s push for digital sovereignty and public technology infrastructure.
