OpenAI has officially shifted ChatGPT’s default AI model to GPT-5.5 Instant, introducing a major upgrade aimed at improving response accuracy, speed, and personalization for users worldwide. The rollout began on May 8 and applies to all ChatGPT users, replacing the earlier GPT-5.3 Instant model that previously powered the platform’s standard experience.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant has been designed to deliver more concise and reliable responses while significantly reducing hallucinations, a common issue where AI systems generate inaccurate or misleading information. Internal evaluations shared by the company indicate that the new model produces 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims in sensitive fields such as medicine, law, and finance. OpenAI also reported a 37.3% reduction in factual inaccuracies during challenging user conversations flagged for errors.
The upgraded model also introduces stronger contextual understanding and improved personalization features. GPT-5.5 Instant can better use information from previous chats, uploaded files, and connected services to tailor responses more effectively. OpenAI has additionally launched a new “memory sources” feature, allowing users to view, manage, or delete the contextual information being used by the AI system. Analysts believe this move is aimed at increasing transparency and user trust as AI assistants become more integrated into everyday workflows.
Beyond conversational improvements, OpenAI stated that GPT-5.5 Instant performs better across a range of tasks including image analysis, STEM-related problem solving, research assistance, and web search integration. The company described the model as faster and more token-efficient while maintaining strong reasoning abilities. OpenAI also highlighted improvements in professional and enterprise use cases such as coding, document generation, spreadsheet analysis, and scientific research workflows.
Industry experts view the update as part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to make ChatGPT more practical for everyday productivity and business applications. The shift toward shorter, clearer, and more accurate responses reflects changing user expectations as AI tools become central to work, education, and digital communication. Analysts also note that OpenAI’s continued focus on personalization and reliability could intensify competition among leading AI companies racing to build more capable consumer and enterprise AI platforms.
