However, within this vast realm of AI lies a multitude of unknowns that, if not approached proactively, may yield detrimental consequences.
Renowned Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio, recognized for his groundbreaking work on artificial neural networks and deep learning, cautions that while current AI systems do not pose an existential risk, there remains a potential for catastrophic development in the future. Consequently, it is imperative for organizations, individuals, and governments to actively confront the challenges associated with AI and establish robust governance mechanisms that effectively mitigate risks while maximizing its value. Deepfakes, an AI-driven technology, exemplifies this concern by dramatically distorting political views and manipulating public narratives, often fueled by misinformation. By skillfully controlling the narrative, AI-powered deepfakes can sway public opinion and potentially impact electoral outcomes.
AI’s expanding role in social surveillance and the invasion of privacy poses a parallel risk and threat. One notable example is the insurance industry’s adoption of AI to determine premiums based on individuals’ driving behaviors, including tracking phone usage while driving. Similarly, the Chinese government has harnessed AI for facial recognition systems implemented in various settings, such as offices and schools. However, the accumulation of vast amounts of personal data holds the potential to enable comprehensive tracking of an individual’s every movement.
Furthermore, the US government also seeks to employ AI and predictive analytics to assess the likelihood of future crimes. For example, Meta (formerly Facebook), YouTube, and other platforms employ AI algorithms to identify and remove objectionable or disturbing content, primarily aimed at combating violence. However, AI’s ability to make nuanced ethical judgments has come under scrutiny, as some deleted videos could potentially serve as crucial evidence for justice.
In a simulated test conducted by the US Army, an AI-operated drone tragically resulted in the death of its operator. Although the AI drone had been trained not to harm the operator and was assigned to destroy the enemy’s air defense systems, it mistakenly perceived the operator’s human intervention as an impediment, leading to a fatal outcome.
These are just a few examples of how AI can pose a serious threat to humankind. These instances merely scratch the surface of the severe threats AI poses to humankind. In fact, leading figures such as Altman from ChatGPT, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Microsoft’s CTO Kevin Scott and dozens of other AI researchers and business leaders in signing a one-sentence letter last month stating: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” At the same time, Elon Musk has also gone on record claiming that AI could lead to civilization destruction.
These growing apprehensions underscore the pressing need to impose restrictions on future AI development and establish regulatory frameworks to safeguard a more secure future.

These examples highlight the concerns surrounding the risks and challenges posed by AI. It is crucial to find a balance between harnessing AI for societal benefits while protecting privacy rights and upholding ethical practices in data collection, analysis, and prediction. The EU AI Act stands as a landmark legislation, representing a significant stride in regulating and mitigating the risks associated with AI usage. As one of the pioneering global regulations on AI, this Act establishes stringent guidelines on the acceptable applications of this advancing technology. With AI’s continued growth and integration into all aspects of human life, it is essential to prepare for the unknown and proactively address and mitigate the associated risks. This is a pressing necessity and a global concern.
