
Tata Consultancy Services has secured land parcels in Visakhapatnam and Pune that could support the first OpenAI-linked data centre capacity in India, moving a major AI-infrastructure partnership from strategic intent toward site-level execution. The Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 200 acres to TCS in Anakapalli district near Visakhapatnam, while the company has also bought an 88-acre plot in Bopkhel near Pune from Hemisphere Properties for Rs 640.50 crore. Shareholders approved the Pune land sale on June 30. The Vizag site is close to the location where Google is building a one-gigawatt hyperscale data centre, further concentrating AI and cloud infrastructure activity in the region.
The development follows the Tata-OpenAI partnership announced earlier under the “OpenAI for India” initiative, which envisaged local AI-ready data centre capacity. Under that framework, OpenAI was expected to become the first customer of Tata’s HyperVault data centre business, beginning with 100 MW of capacity and potentially scaling to 1 GW. The latest land activity does not by itself confirm that both sites will be dedicated to OpenAI workloads, but it marks a concrete step in the buildout of large-scale AI compute infrastructure tied to global model providers and Indian enterprise demand.
TCS chief executive K Krithivasan said last week that the company was in advanced talks with a couple of hyperscalers and expected to sign letters of intent with one or two of them during the quarter. The company is moving into the fast-growing data centre market alongside its traditional IT services business, positioning itself against domestic and global technology-services rivals that are also building data centre and AI-infrastructure capabilities.
The broader context is India’s rising AI infrastructure demand. IDC estimates cited in the reporting project India’s AI spending to grow at a 39% compound annual growth rate between 2025 and 2030, crossing $20 billion by 2030. TCS’ move also places the Tata Group deeper into the convergence of IT services, cloud infrastructure, sovereign AI capacity and hyperscaler partnerships. For enterprise customers, the availability of local high-performance compute capacity is increasingly tied to data residency, latency, compliance, cost control and the ability to deploy large AI systems at production scale.
