Varsha Mahadevan has joined Uber as Director of Engineering – GenAI Platform, marking a new chapter in her career in engineering and artificial intelligence. She announced the appointment through a LinkedIn post, sharing that she has started the new position at the mobility and technology company.
Mahadevan brings extensive experience in engineering leadership, artificial intelligence, machine learning platforms and large-scale technology development. Before joining Uber, she was associated with Coinbase, where she served as Director of Engineering, AI Platform. Her work at Coinbase focused on building AI platform capabilities and solutions aimed at supporting the organisation’s transition toward AI-driven systems.
During her tenure at Coinbase, Mahadevan was involved in the development and deployment of generative AI capabilities across the organisation. She previously led the company’s CB-GPT team, working on the integration of generative AI into employee and customer workflows. Coinbase has also highlighted her role in advancing AI applications and platform capabilities across its ecosystem.
Her earlier career includes a leadership stint at BankBazaar, where she served as Associate Vice President – Engineering. She also spent several years at Microsoft, holding engineering and software development roles. Her experience at Microsoft included work related to Windows, Cortana and search technologies, adding to her background in large-scale software engineering and AI-powered products.
Mahadevan’s move to Uber comes as the company continues to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its technology ecosystem. Uber’s engineering organisation works across machine learning, AI, real-time systems, infrastructure and other technologies that support its products and services at global scale.
In her new role, Mahadevan will focus on GenAI platform engineering at Uber, bringing together her experience in AI infrastructure, engineering leadership and enterprise-scale generative AI systems. Her background in building AI platforms and integrating generative AI into business workflows positions her for a significant technology leadership mandate at Uber.
The appointment also reflects the increasing importance of dedicated AI platform capabilities as technology companies move beyond experimentation and seek to integrate generative AI into products, internal systems and large-scale engineering operations.
