Foxconn has officially begun iPhone 17 production at its newly built $2.8 billion manufacturing facility in Devanahalli, Bengaluru, marking a major step forward in Apple’s long-term strategy to expand operations in India. The factory is now Foxconn’s second-largest production unit outside China, complementing its existing plant in Chennai where iPhone 17 production is also underway.
A source close to the matter confirmed to PTI that the Bengaluru unit is now operational and producing iPhones, underscoring Apple’s accelerating shift of its supply chain out of China. This development comes at a time when Apple is looking to significantly scale up its India production capabilities.
The launch of the Bengaluru facility faced a brief disruption when hundreds of Chinese engineers returned home unexpectedly, causing a temporary delay in operations. Foxconn acted swiftly to resolve the issue by bringing in technical experts from Taiwan and other regions to stabilize production. Despite the initial setback, the plant is now fully functional.
Apple has ambitious targets for India. The tech giant aims to ramp up iPhone production in the country from 35–40 million units in FY25 to 60 million units this fiscal year, as it increasingly leans on India as a manufacturing hub. CEO Tim Cook recently emphasized India’s rising strategic value, stating that a majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June 2025 quarter were assembled in India.
According to industry data, Apple assembled iPhones worth $22 billion in India in FY25, a 60% increase from the previous year. Domestically, the company also continues to gain traction—iPhone shipments in India rose by 21.5% in the first half of 2025, reaching 5.9 million units. In the June quarter alone, Apple saw a 19.7% year-on-year growth, capturing a 7.5% market share, with the iPhone 16 leading the charge.
However, the Indian smartphone market remains fiercely competitive. Vivo continues to dominate with a 19% market share, according to IDC, highlighting the challenges Apple faces even as it scales production and increases local presence.
