Reliance Bets Big on AI with ‘Reliance Intelligence,’ Partners with Google & Meta
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the conglomerate that transformed India’s telecom sector with Jio, is now taking a decisive leap into artificial intelligence with the launch of its new venture, Reliance Intelligence. Teaming up with global tech leaders Google and Meta, RIL aims to build a sovereign-first AI ecosystem backed by green energy-powered data centres, scalable infrastructure, and consumer-facing AI solutions.

Announcing the partnership at Reliance’s AGM 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Google and Reliance are partnering to transform all of Reliance’s businesses with AI—from energy and retail to telecom and financial services.” As part of this collaboration, Google will establish a dedicated Reliance Cloud region to support AI workloads across the group’s diverse businesses. Meta, on the other hand, is contributing its open-source Llama models, which will be integrated into Reliance’s stack, while Jio will provide nationwide scale and distribution.

Industry analysts view this initiative as Reliance’s strategic response to OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate project. Sanchit Vir Gogia, CEO of Greyhound Research, remarked that “Reliance is not attempting to replicate Stargate’s 10 GW ambition but to counter it with a different playbook… localising compute at a gigawatt scale inside India.” Similarly, Rajgopal A S, CEO and MD of NxtGen Cloud Technologies Pvt Ltd, explained that “Reliance Intelligence will essentially serve as a front-end to open-source models from Meta, running on Google TPUs.”

Reliance’s strategy revolves around delivering AI across the value chain—from sovereign cloud and compute infrastructure to enterprise-grade solutions and consumer apps such as Riya and io AI Cloud 2.0. This partnership-led approach seeks to position Reliance as a key player in shaping India’s AI future while maintaining a focus on digital sovereignty and sustainability.

However, the competitive landscape is heating up. With OpenAI recently launching ChatGPT Go in India at an accessible price point of INR 399, the battle for AI adoption is expected to intensify. The coming months will reveal whether Reliance’s ecosystem-driven model can rival OpenAI’s head start and capture the trust of Indian enterprises and consumers alike.
