Tarun Garg Appointed as Hyundai Motor India’s First Indian MD & CEO, Effective January 2026

In a landmark leadership transition, Hyundai Motor Company India Ltd. has appointed Tarun Garg as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, making him the first Indian executive to lead the company since its inception in the country. The Hyundai Motor Company Board of Directors approved the succession plan, under which current MD Unsoo Kim will return to South Korea to assume a strategic role at the parent organization, effective December 31, 2025. Garg will officially take charge on January 1, 2026, marking a pivotal step in Hyundai’s efforts to strengthen its India-centric leadership and localized growth strategy.

With over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, Tarun Garg brings a blend of strategic acumen and market insight to the role. He has been associated with Hyundai Motor India for nearly six years, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer, and previously as Director – Sales, Marketing & Service. During his tenure, Garg has been instrumental in driving Hyundai’s market share, digital transformation, and customer-centric initiatives, further solidifying the company’s position among India’s top automakers.

Before joining Hyundai, Garg spent more than 25 years at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he held several senior leadership roles, including Executive Director – Marketing and Executive Vice President – Nexa. His experience across sales strategy, channel development, and brand management played a key role in expanding Maruti’s premium and mass-market segments.

Hyundai’s decision to elevate an Indian leader to its top post reflects the company’s increasing focus on localized decision-making, cultural alignment, and deeper market understanding. Industry experts view this move as a strategic milestone, reinforcing Hyundai’s long-term commitment to India—its second-largest market globally.

Under Garg’s leadership, Hyundai Motor India is expected to accelerate its transition towards electric mobility, connected technologies, and sustainable innovation, aligning with both the company’s global vision and India’s evolving automotive landscape.
