Amazon expands healthcare services with new AI assistant on its website and mobile app

 

Amazon has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered healthcare assistant on its website and mobile application, marking another step in the company’s efforts to expand its presence in digital healthcare services. The tool is designed to help users manage common health concerns, access medical information, and connect with healthcare providers through a simplified digital interface.

The AI assistant can respond to questions related to symptoms, medications, and medical conditions while also helping users interpret medical results. In addition to answering health-related queries, the system can guide users toward appropriate care options and facilitate connections with medical professionals when required. According to the company, the assistant is intended to reduce the complexity often associated with navigating healthcare systems and make it easier for individuals to access reliable information.

Initially introduced earlier this year as a feature available only to members of Amazon One Medical, the AI assistant has now been expanded to a wider audience. Users do not need to subscribe to the company’s Prime service or hold a One Medical membership to access the assistant, and the service is currently available free of charge through Amazon’s digital platforms.

The assistant is designed to support users dealing with more than 30 common, non-emergency health conditions. These include issues ranging from acne and head lice to chronic conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea. The system can perform basic symptom assessments, provide general guidance about potential treatments, and suggest next steps for seeking professional care when necessary.

Despite these capabilities, Amazon has clarified that the AI assistant does not create medical treatment plans or replace professional medical advice. When a user’s health concern requires more detailed medical evaluation, the system directs the person to a healthcare provider. For individuals who are not members of One Medical, virtual consultations with a provider are available at a cost of $29 per visit unless covered through promotional offers linked to other Amazon services.

To improve the relevance of its recommendations, the assistant can also analyze health-related data with user permission. This includes reviewing medical records, lab results, and clinical notes, as well as examining healthcare-related purchases made on Amazon’s platform, such as vitamins or blood pressure monitors. Using this information, the system may ask follow-up questions or provide additional guidance related to a user’s health situation.

Amazon executives say the goal of the new assistant is to handle the informational and administrative aspects of healthcare that often create friction for patients. By automating routine queries and logistical tasks, the technology is expected to allow both patients and healthcare providers to focus more on direct care and treatment rather than administrative processes.

The launch also reflects Amazon’s broader strategy to build a comprehensive digital healthcare ecosystem. Over the past several years, the company has expanded into multiple healthcare segments, including online pharmacies, virtual care services, and primary care clinics through its acquisition of One Medical. Integrating AI assistants into this ecosystem allows Amazon to connect its healthcare services with its existing digital platforms.

Industry observers believe the move highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in transforming healthcare delivery. AI-powered assistants are increasingly being used to provide preliminary health guidance, automate administrative processes, and improve access to medical information. However, experts also emphasize that such systems must operate alongside healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and maintain clinical accuracy.

As competition intensifies among technology companies entering the healthcare sector, Amazon’s latest launch demonstrates how digital platforms are leveraging artificial intelligence to create more integrated and user-friendly healthcare experiences. The company’s continued investment in AI-driven services suggests that technology will play an increasingly central role in how patients access healthcare in the coming years.
