OpenAI to expand advertising across ChatGPT free and low-cost users amid revenue push

OpenAI is set to expand advertising on ChatGPT to all users on its free and lower-cost tiers, marking a significant shift in its monetization strategy as demand for AI services continues to surge. The move, reported on March 2026, signals the company’s growing focus on generating sustainable revenue from its rapidly expanding user base.

According to reports, advertisements will begin appearing for all users of the free and “Go” subscription tiers in the United States in the coming weeks. The rollout expands on an earlier pilot program and is expected to gradually scale, potentially reaching wider global markets depending on its success.

The ads will be integrated into the ChatGPT experience but are designed to remain separate from the chatbot’s responses. OpenAI has emphasized that advertising content will not influence answers generated by the AI, and user conversations will not be shared with advertisers, addressing potential concerns around trust and data privacy.

To support the initiative, OpenAI has partnered with advertising technology firm Criteo, which is helping facilitate ad placements and targeting. Reports indicate that advertisers are being encouraged to commit between $50,000 and $100,000 for campaigns, with a focus on improving engagement through diverse ad formats and creatives.

The move comes as OpenAI faces rising costs associated with building and maintaining large-scale AI infrastructure. With millions of users relying on ChatGPT, the company is exploring new revenue streams beyond subscriptions to offset expenses and sustain growth.

Industry observers see this as part of a broader trend in the AI sector, where companies are experimenting with hybrid monetization models that combine subscriptions, enterprise services, and advertising. OpenAI’s approach mirrors strategies used by major internet platforms, where free access is supported by targeted ads while premium tiers remain ad-free.

At the same time, the introduction of ads could reshape user experience expectations for AI tools. While it may enable wider access to advanced AI capabilities at low or no cost, it also raises questions about balancing commercialization with usability and trust.

The expansion of advertising within ChatGPT highlights how the economics of artificial intelligence are evolving. As competition intensifies and infrastructure costs rise, monetization strategies like this are likely to play a key role in shaping the future of consumer AI platforms.
