American Express moves to acquire Hyper to boost AI-powered expense management

American Express has announced plans to acquire Hyper, an artificial intelligence-driven expense management startup backed by Sam Altman. The deal reflects a growing trend among financial institutions to integrate AI into core business operations, particularly in areas that rely heavily on manual processing and compliance workflows.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen American Express’s commercial services by embedding advanced automation tools into its offerings for business clients. Hyper specializes in building AI agents capable of handling expense-related tasks such as categorization, report filing, policy compliance checks, and submission reminders, significantly reducing the need for manual intervention.

Founded in 2022, Hyper has positioned itself as a next-generation platform focused on automating enterprise expense management. Its technology goes beyond traditional tools by enabling autonomous workflows that can analyse spending, verify compliance with company policies, and streamline approvals, making it particularly valuable for organizations managing large volumes of transactions.

The two companies already share a working relationship, having collaborated in 2024 to launch a co-branded credit card product. The acquisition builds on this partnership and is expected to integrate Hyper’s capabilities more deeply into American Express’s infrastructure, with plans to roll out enhanced AI-driven expense management solutions soon.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions. The move aligns with American Express’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the corporate spending segment, where automation and efficiency are becoming key competitive differentiators.

The acquisition also highlights a wider shift in the financial services industry, where companies are increasingly leveraging AI to transform traditional processes. As businesses seek faster, more efficient ways to manage expenses and ensure compliance, solutions like those offered by Hyper are expected to play a critical role in shaping the future of enterprise finance.
