Sergey Brin has been brought in to lead a specialized artificial intelligence “strike team” at Google, aimed at strengthening the company’s AI coding capabilities and closing the gap with competitors like Anthropic and its Claude models.
The initiative focuses on building advanced AI systems capable of improving their own code, marking a shift toward self-improving models that can autonomously enhance performance over time. The team is expected to play a key role in accelerating Google’s progress in AI-driven software development, an area where competitors have recently gained momentum.
According to reports, the move comes after internal recognition that Anthropic’s Claude—particularly its coding-focused capabilities—has outperformed Google’s existing Gemini models in certain areas. This has prompted urgency within Google DeepMind to strengthen its position in what is becoming one of the most competitive segments of the AI industry.
In a message to teams, Brin emphasized the need to rapidly close the gap, stating that the goal is to “bridge the gap in agentic execution” and transform AI models into primary developers capable of handling more complex tasks independently.
