SK Hynix to Invest Nearly $13 Billion in AI Memory Plant to Meet Surging Demand

South Korea’s SK Hynix has announced plans to invest approximately $12.85 billion (around 19 trillion won) in a new semiconductor facility aimed at boosting production of artificial intelligence memory. The move highlights the intensifying global race to secure critical infrastructure needed for AI technologies, particularly in high-performance computing and data centers.

The new plant will focus on advanced chip packaging, a crucial step in manufacturing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI systems. These memory chips are essential for handling large volumes of data at high speeds, making them a key component in powering AI models, cloud computing platforms, and next-generation digital applications.

Construction of the facility is expected to begin in April 2026, with the project forming part of SK Hynix’s broader strategy to expand its production capacity. The company has been accelerating investments to stay ahead of rising demand, particularly as AI adoption drives unprecedented growth in semiconductor requirements globally.

The investment comes amid a global shortage of advanced memory chips, where demand from AI data centers and high-performance computing systems continues to outpace supply. SK Hynix, a major supplier to leading technology companies, is positioning itself to strengthen its leadership in the high-value AI memory segment through large-scale infrastructure expansion.

Industry experts note that advanced packaging has become one of the most critical bottlenecks in semiconductor manufacturing. By focusing on this segment, SK Hynix aims to improve efficiency and performance of its memory products while ensuring faster delivery to customers operating in AI-driven industries.
