Anthropic executive Cat Wu believes the next major evolution in artificial intelligence will be “proactivity” — AI systems that can anticipate what users need before they even ask. Speaking at Anthropic’s Code with Claude conference in San Francisco, Wu said future AI assistants could move beyond reactive chatbots and become deeply integrated collaborators that understand user behavior, workflows, and intent.
Wu, who leads product development for Claude Code and Cowork at Anthropic, explained that today’s AI systems still largely wait for instructions from users. However, she believes future systems will proactively suggest actions, organize work, surface relevant information, and automate tasks before users explicitly request help.
According to Wu, this shift toward anticipatory AI could fundamentally change how people interact with technology. For example, AI systems may eventually recognize patterns in calendars, meetings, documents, coding projects, or workflows and automatically prepare follow-up tasks, schedule actions, summarize discussions, or retrieve information in advance.
The comments come during a period of rapid growth for Anthropic. Reports suggest the company is preparing for a massive funding round that could reportedly value the company at nearly $950 billion, potentially surpassing OpenAI in valuation. Anthropic has also seen strong growth among enterprise customers, with Claude reportedly gaining increasing adoption across business and developer communities.
Wu has played a key role in Anthropic’s expansion since joining the company in 2024. She helped guide Claude from being primarily an informational chatbot into a broader AI productivity and coding platform. Anthropic’s recent product strategy has focused heavily on AI-assisted coding, collaborative workflows, and enterprise productivity tools.
Anthropic’s broader vision aligns with a growing industry-wide push toward “agentic AI” — systems capable of independently carrying out multi-step tasks across applications and services. Companies including Notion, Google, and Microsoft are also investing heavily in AI agents designed to act more autonomously within workplace and productivity environments.
At the same time, the concept of increasingly proactive AI has raised concerns among researchers and regulators around privacy, autonomy, and control. Critics argue that AI systems capable of deeply predicting user behavior may require access to significant amounts of personal data and contextual information, increasing both ethical and security risks.
