Google Expands Free AI Training for Indian Educators

On May 19, 2026, at the Education World Forum in London, Google announced the expansion of its free AI training program for educators to India, enabling school and college teachers across the country to learn how to use artificial intelligence responsibly in educational settings. The initiative, part of Google’s AI Educator Series, aims to strengthen AI literacy among teachers and improve learning experiences for students.

Originally launched in the United States, the Google AI Educator Series offers comprehensive training on Gemini and AI tools tailored for K-12 and higher education faculty. With its expansion into India, the program will provide educators from schools and universities with practical, mobile-first AI training designed to meet local needs. To ensure accessibility, the training will be fully localized into six Indian languages — Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi — during its initial year, beginning with pilot implementations in select states.

The training initiative is being delivered in collaboration with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Assam, the Union Territory of Ladakh and the Punjab School Education Board. It supports the National Education Policy 2020, which highlights artificial intelligence as a key area for teacher preparation and flexible learning across disciplines.

Participation in the program is open to school teachers and higher education faculty across India. Google has indicated its intention to expand the initiative further by working with more states, universities, and regulatory organizations to broaden the reach and impact of AI training.

In addition to the educator series, Google is partnering with UNICEF and Google.org on a global initiative to support education innovation in India, Brazil, Pakistan, and Kenya. This effort seeks to address digital divides and unequal access to technology by improving learning outcomes, particularly in areas like literacy and numeracy, through teacher support and technology integration.

Over the next three years, UNICEF will work with local communities to develop scalable solutions, including training educators to use Gemini and NotebookLM for personalized instruction and deploying tools such as the India-first ReadAlong app to enhance foundational reading skills through guided practice.

Google will support the initiative not only through funding from Google.org but also by providing access to technology tools and ongoing product workshops for UNICEF staff, government officials, and education leaders. UNICEF will produce annual impact reports to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions implemented in each country.

These efforts build on Google’s ongoing support for India’s education ecosystem, which has included contributions to India’s first AI-enabled state university and integrating Gemini into students’ learning and test-preparation journeys. Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund has also been expanded across the Asia-Pacific region to provide millions of students, teachers, and workers in 19 countries — including India — with access to AI skills development.
