Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband venture is preparing for wider global expansion and has identified India as one of its promising markets as the company approaches nearly 400 satellites in orbit. Chris Hofer, Head of International Spectrum Management and Strategy at Amazon LEO, said at the IAFI Space Policy Conference 2026 that the company is manufacturing more than 15 satellites a week and accelerating deployment toward its broadband-connectivity goals.
Hofer said Amazon LEO’s mission is to connect underserved and unconnected communities, and described India as a strong candidate because of its digital orientation and remaining connectivity gaps. The company’s India interest comes as satellite broadband competition intensifies among global and domestic players, including SpaceX’s Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb. Amazon’s Project Kuiper is part of a broader low Earth orbit constellation race in which satellite capacity, regulatory approvals, spectrum policy, service pricing and local partnerships will determine market entry speed.
For India, the development sits at the intersection of telecom policy, rural connectivity, enterprise networks and digital inclusion. Terrestrial broadband expansion has improved significantly, but hard-to-reach regions still face infrastructure gaps where fibre and tower economics can be difficult. LEO satellite broadband services could provide an additional connectivity layer for remote communities, logistics corridors, maritime users, emergency response networks, government services, defence-linked communications and enterprises operating in low-density markets.
The satellite broadband market is also becoming strategically important because connectivity is now a foundation layer for cloud adoption, digital public services, AI-enabled applications and online commerce. Amazon’s entry would add another hyperscaler-backed competitor to India’s satcom ecosystem, creating a more complex competitive environment for telecom operators and satellite service providers. It could also influence pricing, distribution models and enterprise service bundles, particularly if satellite connectivity is integrated with cloud, edge computing or managed network offerings.
Regulatory sequencing remains central. Satellite broadband providers need Indian approvals across licensing, space-sector authorisation, security compliance and spectrum assignment before commercial services can scale. India’s policy choices on satcom spectrum pricing and allocation will shape whether multiple operators can build viable businesses or whether only a few players achieve meaningful coverage.
Amazon’s disclosure that it has almost 400 satellites in orbit gives the market a clearer sense of deployment maturity. The company is not merely expressing interest in India; it is building constellation capacity at pace. As the network expands, India’s telecom and digital-infrastructure stakeholders will be watching how Amazon positions its service against incumbents, Starlink-led partnerships, Eutelsat OneWeb and domestic satellite-broadband ambitions.
