The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has initiated an inquiry into Google based on a complaint by gaming platform WinZO, which accuses the tech giant of discriminatory practices in its advertising policies.
WinZO claims that Google favored other casual gaming platforms, such as Zupee and MPL, by permitting their advertisements while blocking those from WinZO, resulting in restricted market visibility and access.
The CCI has identified potential violations of Sections 4(2)(a)(i), 4(2)(b), and 4(2)(c) of the Competition Act, 2002. These provisions address unfair market conditions, restrictions on market access, and denial of market opportunities, respectively.
In particular, the CCI raised concerns about Google’s selective enforcement of its advertising policies, including its restrictions on advertising real-money gaming apps, except for fantasy sports and rummy. The Commission has directed the Director General to conduct a comprehensive investigation and submit findings within 60 days.
This investigation marks a critical step in addressing alleged anti-competitive practices in India’s digital advertising and gaming sectors.
