Google Announces $15 Billion Investment to Expand AI and Data Centre Infrastructure in Malaysia

Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion in Malaysia over the next two years, marking a major expansion of its digital infrastructure as demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services continues to increase globally.

The investment, scheduled for 2027 and 2028, will support the development of data centres and other technology infrastructure across the country. The announcement was made on Wednesday and builds on Google’s earlier $2 billion investment commitment announced in 2024.

Malaysia has emerged as an important destination for data centre investments in Southeast Asia, supported by growing internet adoption, increasing digital activity and demand for advanced computing infrastructure. Google’s latest commitment is expected to strengthen the country’s position as a regional technology hub.

According to the company, its planned infrastructure will include energy-efficient data centre campuses in industrial zones, with facilities in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. The investment will also support Google’s cloud services and provide computing capacity for businesses developing and operating artificial intelligence applications.

Beyond infrastructure development, Google has outlined plans to support local employment and workforce development. The company expects its operational facilities to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs annually, with wages projected to average 45% above Malaysia’s national median. During the construction phase between 2027 and 2028, the projects are expected to support more than 37,000 local jobs per year.

The company has also announced initiatives to strengthen Malaysia’s digital skills ecosystem. Through new training programmes, Google aims to help approximately 800,000 Malaysians develop AI-related and digital skills by 2031. The initiatives will focus on educators, students, small businesses, public-sector employees and vocational jobseekers.

Energy and water management are also central to the investment plan. Google has pledged to support the addition of more than one gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national electricity grid. It also plans to work with local partners on water replenishment projects and initiatives designed to improve long-term water security.

The announcement comes as countries across Southeast Asia compete to attract technology investments and strengthen their digital economies. However, the rapid expansion of data centres has also raised concerns about electricity consumption, water requirements and environmental sustainability.

With its latest commitment, Google is positioning Malaysia as an important part of its growing AI and cloud infrastructure network. The investment reflects the increasing importance of regional data centre capacity as businesses and consumers adopt more AI-powered services.
