Bengaluru, The Semiconductor Fabless Accelerator Lab (SFAL) Foundation, a Karnataka government-backed semiconductor initiative, has seen the combined valuation of companies supported through its ecosystem cross ₹1,000 crore, highlighting the growing scale of the state’s deeptech and semiconductor startup ecosystem.
Established in 2019, SFAL has supported more than 100 semiconductor and electronic systems companies. The initiative was initially focused on enabling fabless semiconductor design startups but is now expanding its scope to cover a broader portion of the semiconductor and electronics value chain.
Under its expanded strategy, SFAL is looking to support companies working across pre-silicon design, post-silicon testing, semiconductor packaging and electronics manufacturing services (EMS). The move is aimed at developing capabilities beyond chip design and creating a more comprehensive domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
The expansion comes as Karnataka strengthens its semiconductor development programmes through SFAL 2.0, or Semiconductor Future Accelerator Lab. The Karnataka government had approved SFAL 2.0 at an estimated project cost of ₹79.80 crore, with ₹50 crore to be provided by the state government over five years and the remaining funding expected from the Centre.
SFAL’s acceleration programme provides semiconductor startups with access to technical infrastructure, mentorship, industry partnerships, market access and commercialisation support. Its facilities and ecosystem are designed to assist companies with semiconductor design, prototyping, testing and validation while also helping startups with intellectual property strategy, customer acquisition and go-to-market execution.
The initiative is also working to develop semiconductor talent and support technology commercialisation as India seeks to strengthen domestic capabilities across chip design, electronics manufacturing and related technologies.
The broader mandate of SFAL 2.0 is expected to further support research and development of semiconductor intellectual property and products while enabling startups and MSMEs to develop technologies for domestic and global markets.
The Semiconductor Fabless Accelerator Lab is a Karnataka government-backed Centre of Excellence focused on strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem. It supports startups and companies through technology development, commercialisation, startup acceleration and workforce development, while providing access to design, prototyping, testing, validation, mentorship, industry partnerships and funding opportunities.
