On Tuesday, Namma Yatri, an open-mobility application that started with autorickshaws, expanded its offerings to include cab services in Bengaluru. The app operates on the ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) network and uses a unique business model where drivers pay a subscription fee instead of a commission on the revenue from each ride.
Namma Yatri announced that this approach is designed to increase drivers’ earnings, improve vehicle maintenance, and enhance the overall customer experience. According to their press release, “Aligned with the ethos of transparency and community collaboration, Namma Yatri proudly operates within the ONDC network, offering 100% open data and open-source code. Additionally, Namma Yatri takes the lead as the first app to embrace the latest pricing guidelines set forth by the Karnataka government.”
The service now includes various cab options such as non-AC mini, AC mini, sedan, and XL cabs. The introduction of the non-AC mini cab is aimed at eliminating common misunderstandings between drivers and passengers about air conditioning use, ensuring clear service expectations and competitive pricing for budget-conscious consumers. This option also supports eco-friendly transportation choices. The company revealed plans to soon expand services to include inter-city travel, rentals, scheduled rides, and extend across Karnataka. Additional services catering to special requests like disability-friendly rides, extra luggage, traveling with pets, and trips to public transportation hubs are also in the works.
Namma Yatri currently has 25,000 cab drivers and aims to increase this number to over 1 lakh within the next six months, as stated in the release.
