Paytm Reports ₹225 Crore Quarterly Profit as Revenue and Payment Margins Expand

One 97 Communications, the parent of Paytm, reported a profit after tax of ₹225 crore for the September quarter of FY27, compared with ₹21 crore in the corresponding period a year earlier. Revenue from operations increased 28% year on year and 8% sequentially to ₹2,648 crore, while total income, including ₹182 crore of other income, reached ₹2,830 crore.

EBITDA rose 90% year on year to a record ₹270 crore, giving Paytm a double-digit EBITDA margin of approximately 10% for the first time. Total expenses increased 23% year on year to ₹2,531 crore, growing more slowly than operating revenue. The quarterly profit was also marginally higher than the ₹220 crore recorded in the June quarter.

Financial-services distribution remained a major growth contributor. Revenue from that segment increased 49% year on year to ₹912 crore, supported by merchant loans, personal loans, Paytm Postpaid, equity broking, margin-trade funding and Paytm Gold. The company continues to position payments as the customer-acquisition layer for distributing credit, wealth and other financial products.

Management also provided an implementation timeline for the newly introduced merchant discount rate on select UPI merchant transactions. Paytm expects the change to add approximately 2.5 basis points to its payment-processing margin, with the transition taking two to three quarters to stabilise. The final financial effect will depend on merchant adoption, transaction mix and the commercial arrangements between payment participants.

The company said it is using AI in consumer engagement, merchant services and internal operations as part of what it describes as a payments-led financial-services distribution and AI-diffusion model. These deployments are intended to improve service efficiency and monetisation while controlling operating costs.

Paytm’s quarterly disclosure follows a prolonged effort to rebuild its payments and financial-services business around a more controlled cost base. The latest results show three consecutive elements moving together: sustained transaction activity, higher financial-services distribution revenue and operating leverage. Management’s next earnings call is expected to provide additional information on merchant adoption, credit distribution and the pace at which the revised UPI economics flow through the income statement.
