Pentagon Signals New AI Compliance Guidelines as US Moves to Clarify Rules for Developers

The US federal government plans to outline the laws and regulations applicable to domestic artificial intelligence companies later this month, according to Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael.

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal technology conference in Napa, California, on Wednesday, November 4, Michael said the government would publish details of the regulatory framework within the next week or two.

Michael is also the vice chair of the government’s Super Intelligence Task Force, an intergovernmental body established by President Donald Trump to develop artificial intelligence policy.

The announcement is intended to provide greater clarity to AI companies operating in the United States about the rules they are expected to follow. Michael did not provide further details about the regulations or explain which specific areas of AI development would be covered.

He said the government wanted to establish a framework that would give the American public confidence that AI companies would act responsibly.

“What we’re trying to do is create a framework that makes the American people have confidence that these companies are going to do the right thing,” Michael said.

He also cautioned that the absence of clear guidance could lead to a fragmented regulatory response from lawmakers. Referring to the possibility of separate legislative action, he said, “Or else I think what you get is 535 legislators writing a piece of regulation that could kill the industry.”

The planned announcement comes as governments continue to address how AI companies should be regulated while supporting the development of the technology. The forthcoming framework is expected to clarify the existing legal and regulatory requirements for domestic AI laboratories.
