Era Computer Raises $11 Million to Build Software Platform for AI Gadgets

AI startup Era Computer has raised $11 million in funding to develop a software platform designed to power the next generation of AI-enabled hardware devices. The round was backed by investors including BetaWorks and Abstract Ventures, reflecting growing interest in infrastructure supporting emerging AI hardware ecosystems.

Rather than building its own hardware, Era is focused on creating a unified “intelligence layer” that can run across multiple types of AI gadgets. The company believes the future of AI hardware will not be dominated by a single device but will expand into diverse form factors such as smart glasses, rings, pendants, and other wearable or ambient devices.

Its platform is designed to support multimodal inputs and manage inference across devices, enabling manufacturers to integrate advanced AI capabilities without building complex software systems from scratch. Currently, the system supports over 130 large language models from more than 14 providers, allowing flexibility for different use cases and hardware designs.

The startup is positioning itself as a foundational layer for AI hardware, similar to how operating systems enabled the smartphone ecosystem. By offering tools for orchestration, model selection, and scalability, Era aims to help developers experiment with new device categories and bring AI-powered products to market faster.

The funding comes at a time when early AI hardware products have struggled to gain traction, with companies like Humane facing challenges and others still in experimental stages. Era sees this fragmentation as an opportunity, betting that as more use cases emerge, demand for a standardized software backbone will increase.

Overall, the development highlights a shift in the AI industry, where attention is moving beyond models and applications toward building the underlying infrastructure needed to support a wide range of intelligent devices.
