
Mumbai: Honda Motor Co. has selected Tata Technologies to undertake a full vehicle engineering programme, marking a significant step in the Japanese automaker’s strategy of using external engineering partners to shorten development cycles and improve cost competitiveness.
The engagement is expected to cover end-to-end vehicle development for a new passenger vehicle programme, reflecting Honda’s broader push to leverage specialist engineering capabilities as it accelerates product development for key markets.
The project is notable because Japanese automakers have traditionally relied heavily on in-house engineering for vehicle development. Tata Technologies had previously disclosed that it had secured a strategically important full vehicle development programme from a leading Japanese automotive original equipment manufacturer, without naming the customer. Industry reports have since identified Honda as that customer.
For Honda, the partnership aligns with a wider restructuring plan announced earlier this year. The company said it would make greater use of external development resources, particularly in India and China, to improve speed, flexibility and cost competitiveness while reducing development time and expenses. Honda is targeting a substantial reduction in development cost, workload and timelines as part of its medium-term turnaround strategy.
India has emerged as a priority market for Honda’s future growth. The company plans to introduce new models tailored to local customer preferences beginning in 2028, focusing on vehicles under four metres in length and the mid-size segment. It has also outlined plans to strengthen its product pipeline and local development capabilities as it seeks to expand its presence in the country’s passenger vehicle market.
For Tata Technologies, the programme represents one of its largest vehicle engineering mandates and further strengthens its credentials in providing product engineering and digital services to global automotive manufacturers. The company has increasingly focused on end-to-end vehicle development, software-defined vehicles and digital engineering solutions as automakers outsource more of their product development activities.
The collaboration also reflects a broader shift in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are increasingly working with engineering service providers to reduce costs, accelerate product launches and manage the growing complexity of software-defined and electrified vehicles.
