Lupin has appointed Shubham Bansal as its Global Chief AI & Data Officer (CAIDO), giving him a company-wide mandate to build artificial intelligence and data capabilities across the pharmaceutical major’s global operations.
Bansal announced his new role on LinkedIn, saying that he has joined Lupin as Global Chief AI & Data Officer. He described the opportunity as an important milestone in his career and said his mandate will involve building AI and data as enterprise capabilities across the global pharmaceutical organisation.
In his new role, Bansal will work across multiple areas of Lupin’s business, including commercial operations, manufacturing, supply chain, quality and research and development. His responsibilities will also involve building the foundations needed to translate data and AI capabilities into business outcomes across the organisation.
Bansal said the role will allow him to work across different parts of the pharmaceutical business while developing AI and data capabilities at an enterprise level. He also highlighted the opportunity to apply technology in an industry where its use extends beyond operational efficiency.
In his announcement, Bansal thanked Rakesh Bhardwaj, Dr. Ramesh Swaminathan and Yashwant Mahadik for placing their trust in him and giving him the opportunity to take on the new mandate. He also acknowledged the Lupin hiring and onboarding teams involved in his transition to the company.
The appointment comes as Lupin continues to expand the use of data, automation and artificial intelligence across its operations. The company began its digital transformation journey in 2021 and has since been working to integrate AI and digital technologies across areas including research, manufacturing and compliance.
Lupin has previously said that its digital transformation strategy is focused on making data, automation and AI key enablers across different business functions. The company has been using technologies including Industrial Internet of Things and Manufacturing Execution Systems for real-time operational control, while also expanding generative AI pilots and analytics capabilities.
Rakesh Bhardwaj, who serves as Chief Information Officer at Lupin, has previously described the company’s digital strategy as covering the journey from research and development through to the stage when its products reach pharmacies. Lupin has identified patient outcomes, operational excellence and developing a future-ready workforce among the priorities of its digital and AI initiatives.
Bansal’s new position separates the AI and data mandate into a dedicated global leadership role, while Lupin’s broader technology function is led by its Chief Information Officer. Lupin appointed Rakesh Bhardwaj as CIO in March 2024, with responsibility for the company’s global information technology function and digital transformation.
The Global Chief AI & Data Officer role will therefore cover a broad set of enterprise functions, with Bansal’s mandate extending across commercial, manufacturing, supply chain, quality and R&D. His stated focus is on establishing strong AI and data foundations and using them to support business outcomes across Lupin’s global operations.
