Amazon Pay expands into health insurance as CEO Vikas Bansal outlines broader financial-services strategy

Amazon Pay India is expanding its insurance-distribution business after launching health-insurance products in partnership with HDFC ERGO General Insurance, adding a new component to its effort to develop a broader financial-services platform spanning payments, credit, insurance, savings and investment products.

Chief executive Vikas Bansal said the company is also considering travel insurance and may introduce additional insurance categories. The strategy moves Amazon Pay beyond its original role as a checkout and payments facility within Amazon’s commerce ecosystem, extending its participation into regulated financial-product distribution.

Amazon Pay operates as a registered corporate agent for insurance. This permits the company to distribute policies issued by licensed insurers rather than underwrite the risk itself. It has already distributed motor-insurance products and works with providers including HDFC ERGO, ACKO and ICICI Lombard. Amazon is also a minority shareholder in Indian digital insurer ACKO.

The health-insurance launch gives Amazon Pay access to a category shaped by rising medical costs and relatively limited ownership of individual health policies. Bansal identified health insurance as the company’s next major expansion area. The distribution journey is being built as a self-service digital process with AI-assisted guidance designed to help customers discover, understand and purchase policies.

Amazon Pay’s wider financial-services portfolio has been expanding across several fronts. The company offers consumer credit products, Amazon Pay Later, co-branded cards and personal loans through financial-sector partners. It has also entered fixed-deposit distribution and recently announced a credit card for small businesses with Kotak Mahindra Bank. In 2025, Amazon acquired Bengaluru-based non-bank lender Axio, giving the group a direct lending business and additional capabilities in credit underwriting and loan management.

The insurance initiative is consequently part of a connected financial-services strategy rather than a standalone product addition. Payments data, Amazon’s customer reach and embedded distribution within its app provide the operating foundation, while licensed banks, insurers and other regulated entities continue to supply or underwrite the financial products.

India’s general-insurance industry is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 10%, with gross written premiums increasing from an estimated $43.4 billion in 2026 to more than $62 billion by 2030. Amazon Pay’s expansion places it in competition with banks, dedicated insurance marketplaces, consumer-finance applications and other large digital-payment platforms seeking to distribute policies through mobile channels.

Bansal said Amazon remains open to further investments in insurance. No additional acquisition, investment target or launch timetable has been announced. Travel insurance is under consideration, while the immediate operational priority is scaling the newly launched health-insurance offering and integrating it with Amazon Pay’s existing payments and credit services.
