Egypt Plans $1 Billion AI Data Centre With NVIDIA Technology

Egypt is moving ahead with plans to develop a large-scale artificial intelligence data centre with a targeted investment of $1 billion, as the country seeks to strengthen its digital infrastructure and establish itself as a regional hub for artificial intelligence and data services.

The planned facility is expected to reach 200 megawatts (MW) of capacity when fully developed. The project will begin with an initial 20 MW facility, backed by an investment of approximately $200 million during its first three years, before expanding towards the larger 200 MW target.

The project is being developed through partnerships involving Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies. Vodafone Business brings its cloud and enterprise-services capabilities, while Elsewedy Electric contributes expertise in infrastructure, energy and project execution. Cassava Technologies brings its experience in developing data-centre infrastructure across Africa.

A separate partnership between Vodafone Business and Cassava Technologies will focus on developing what the companies describe as Egypt’s first sovereign AI data centre. The facility will use advanced computing infrastructure, including NVIDIA technologies, to support the development and deployment of AI applications while allowing data to be hosted and processed within Egypt.

The AI facility is also expected to provide GPU-as-a-Service, giving organisations access to high-performance computing resources for AI workloads without requiring them to move sensitive data outside the country. This is intended to support local AI development while strengthening data residency, security and control over locally hosted information.

The broader Africa Data Centres Egypt project is expected to attract approximately $200 million in foreign direct investment during its first phase, with total investment projected to reach $1 billion once the targeted capacity is completed. The development is also expected to create up to 200 direct jobs and around 2,000 indirect employment opportunities.

Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi announced the project as the country looks to increase private-sector participation in its digital economy. The government sees data centres, cloud computing and AI infrastructure as important components of its efforts to strengthen Egypt’s technology capabilities and attract additional international investment.

The planned infrastructure is intended to serve enterprises, cloud service providers and international technology companies operating in or expanding into Egypt. Increasing local capacity for data hosting and processing could also help organisations handle workloads within the country rather than relying entirely on infrastructure located elsewhere.

The initiative comes as Egypt works to develop a broader national data-centre strategy. The strategy is intended to assess the country’s future storage and computing requirements, attract domestic and international investment, strengthen the regulatory framework and encourage international standards for data-centre development.

The government is also looking at areas including operational efficiency, sustainability, specialised skills development and digital sovereignty as part of the wider strategy. Hindi has highlighted Egypt’s geographic location and extensive network of international submarine cables as potential advantages for developing the country into a regional centre for data, cloud services and AI.

The AI infrastructure push comes amid growing competition between the United States and China for influence in artificial intelligence and advanced computing across emerging markets. The Economic Times report noted that the Egyptian project is unfolding against this broader technology rivalry, with Chinese technology company Huawei also having been linked to proposals for data-centre development in the country.

The US-China dimension adds strategic significance to Egypt’s infrastructure plans. Countries across the Middle East and Africa are increasingly seeking to develop local AI and cloud capabilities, while technology providers are competing to supply the computing hardware and infrastructure required to support those systems.

For Egypt, developing sovereign AI infrastructure could provide greater control over where sensitive data is stored and processed while giving local businesses access to high-performance computing resources. The planned use of NVIDIA accelerated-computing technology through Cassava’s partnership is expected to support AI workloads that require substantial computing power.

However, building large AI data centres also presents significant infrastructure requirements. AI-focused facilities can consume substantially more electricity than conventional data centres, making reliable power availability an important consideration for their development. The Economic Times report noted that Egypt has faced energy challenges in the past, adding another infrastructure dimension to the country’s AI ambitions.

The planned 200 MW, $1 billion project therefore represents a major expansion of Egypt’s digital infrastructure ambitions. Beginning with a 20 MW, $200 million phase and subsequently scaling toward the full target, the project is intended to increase local data-centre capacity while supporting cloud services, high-performance computing and AI applications.

With Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies involved, and NVIDIA technology forming part of the sovereign AI infrastructure, Egypt is positioning the project as a foundation for its broader ambitions in AI, cloud computing, data sovereignty and digital infrastructure.
