Google to Invest $15.1 Billion in AI Infrastructure in Finland

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced plans to invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years. The investment, which will cover data centres, electricity-grid improvements, clean-energy projects and battery infrastructure, represents Google’s largest single investment in Europe as the company expands its capacity to meet growing demand for AI computing.

The planned investment is scheduled to take place during 2027 and 2028. Google said the new infrastructure will support some of its major services, including Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube. The company is also looking to strengthen the wider digital infrastructure needed for AI development in Finland and across Europe.

The expansion will include Google’s existing data-centre operations in Hamina, along with development across three additional sites in Finland. Google’s Hamina data centre is located at a former paper mill that the company acquired in 2009. The company has previously expanded its presence in Finland, making the country an increasingly important location for its European data-centre infrastructure.

Finland’s energy and climate characteristics are among the factors making it attractive for large-scale data-centre investments. The country has a cold climate, which can reduce the cost of cooling data-centre facilities, while its electricity system has access to significant amounts of low-carbon power. These conditions can help technology companies manage the energy requirements associated with increasingly power-intensive AI infrastructure.

As part of the investment, Google also plans to support electricity-grid improvements and battery projects. The company is seeking to strengthen the infrastructure surrounding its data centres while contributing to Finland’s broader energy system. Google’s plans include power-purchase agreements with Finnish onshore wind providers and the deployment of battery capacity intended to help stabilise the electricity grid.

The investment is expected to have a wider economic impact on Finland. According to the Reuters report, the project is estimated to contribute approximately $3.6 billion to Finland’s gross domestic product during the construction period. Once the infrastructure becomes operational, the investment is expected to support approximately 7,000 jobs annually.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed Google’s investment, highlighting its potential to strengthen the country’s position in the digital economy and support wider innovation, research and development. The expansion is expected to add to Finland’s role as a European location for data centres and technology infrastructure.

Google’s Finland expansion comes as technology companies continue to increase spending on computing infrastructure to support the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. AI models require significant computing capacity for both training and deployment, increasing demand for data centres, electricity and supporting infrastructure.

The Finland investment also forms part of Alphabet’s broader increase in capital spending. Alphabet has raised its expected global investment for the year to between $195 billion and $205 billion, reflecting the company’s efforts to build capacity in response to increasing computing demand.

For Google, the Finland project therefore represents more than an expansion of data-centre capacity. By combining data centres with grid upgrades, renewable-energy sourcing and battery infrastructure, the company is building an integrated base for AI and digital services while also seeking to address the growing energy requirements associated with AI.

The planned €13 billion investment further strengthens Finland’s position in Europe’s AI infrastructure landscape and underscores the scale of investment technology companies are making to support the next phase of artificial intelligence development. Google’s expansion is expected to provide additional computing capacity for its services while contributing to Finland’s digital infrastructure, energy system and economy over the coming years.
