Huawei and Chinese chipmakers rapidly adopt DeepSeek V4 to strengthen domestic AI ecosystem

Chinese technology companies and chipmakers are rapidly embracing DeepSeek V4, the latest artificial intelligence model from Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, as the country accelerates efforts to reduce dependence on US technology. The new model has been optimized to run on domestic hardware, particularly Huawei’s Ascend AI chips, marking a major milestone in China’s push for a self-sufficient AI ecosystem.

A key development behind the growing momentum is DeepSeek V4’s compatibility with Huawei’s Ascend AI processors. Chinese cloud providers and internet companies, including firms linked to Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance, are reportedly rushing to secure Huawei AI chips following the release of the model. Demand for Huawei’s Ascend 950 processors has surged as companies seek domestic alternatives to Nvidia hardware amid ongoing US export restrictions.

The collaboration between DeepSeek and Huawei reflects a broader national strategy to strengthen China’s AI and semiconductor independence. DeepSeek’s V4 model was specifically adapted for Huawei hardware, with Huawei confirming that its Ascend chips were used during parts of the training process. Industry analysts view this as a significant step toward proving that advanced Chinese AI models can be trained and deployed without relying entirely on American technology platforms.

The rapid adoption of DeepSeek V4 is also benefiting China’s wider domestic chip ecosystem. Companies such as Cambricon and other local GPU manufacturers are seeing strong growth as Chinese firms diversify away from Nvidia. Analysts expect China’s homegrown AI chip market to expand significantly over the next few years, supported by government investment, rising enterprise demand, and increasing integration between domestic AI models and local hardware providers.

At the same time, DeepSeek itself is becoming one of China’s most strategically important AI companies. The startup is reportedly seeking billions of dollars in new funding at a valuation approaching $45–50 billion, with support from state-backed investment funds and major Chinese technology firms. As competition intensifies globally, DeepSeek’s partnership with Huawei and local chipmakers highlights how China is building an increasingly integrated AI stack spanning models, chips, cloud infrastructure, and deployment platforms.
