Microsoft invests $1.5 billion in UAE-based AI firm G4

Microsoft has announced a substantial $1.5 billion investment in G42, an artificial intelligence company based in the United Arab Emirates. This investment secures Microsoft a minority stake in G42 and a position on its board.

Under the terms of the agreement, G42 will utilize Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform to power its AI applications and services. The aim is to offer advanced AI solutions to global public sectors and major corporations.

Brad Smith, President of Microsoft and newly appointed board member at G42, emphasized the partnership’s dedication to combining cutting-edge technology with the highest standards of safe and responsible AI. This collaboration will be closely overseen in cooperation with both the UAE and U.S. governments.

Furthermore, the initiative intends to expand AI and digital infrastructure throughout the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, aligning with broader geopolitical efforts to manage technology exchanges with specific nations.

Beyond the technology collaboration, Microsoft and G42 will contribute to establishing a $1 billion fund to bolster AI capabilities in the UAE and the wider region. This initiative coincides with G42’s efforts to reduce its reliance on Chinese technology by moving away from Chinese hardware and discontinuing the use of Huawei telecom equipment due to security concerns.

This partnership marks a significant advancement in promoting global technology cooperation, enhancing AI capabilities while upholding strict security and ethical standards.
