OpenAI has launched the first two courses under its new OpenAI Certifications initiative—AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers—marking a major step toward equipping workers and educators with practical, applied AI skills. Announcing the rollout, the company said, “AI will unlock more opportunities for more people than any technology in history,” adding that more than 800 million people use ChatGPT each week for learning, work and problem solving. Citing PwC research, OpenAI also noted that workers with AI capabilities earn about 56 percent more than those without, underscoring the growing importance of formal AI training.
The AI Foundations programme is structured to help learners build essential AI competencies directly within ChatGPT, which OpenAI describes as “the tutor, the practice space, and the feedback loop.” The certification will initially be available through pilot programmes run in collaboration with major employers and public sector partners, including Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Upwork, Accenture, and the state governments of Delaware and New Jersey. OpenAI is also working with Coursera, ETS and Credly to ensure the certification meets global standards for instructional quality, assessment and credential portability.
In parallel, OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, a Coursera-based course designed specifically for K–12 educators. The company plans to integrate the programme into ChatGPT and the upcoming ChatGPT for Teachers offering by early 2026, providing educators with hands-on tools and practical frameworks for using generative AI in the classroom. The initiative expands on OpenAI’s ongoing partnerships with the American Federation of Teachers, as well as university pilots at Arizona State University and across the California State University system.
Together, these certifications form part of the broader pathway leading to the forthcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform, which will match candidates trained in AI with real-world opportunities. The platform is being developed through collaborations with Indeed and a new partnership with Upwork, enabling AI-skilled workers to tap into higher-quality job markets.
With the introduction of these courses, OpenAI aims to establish a scalable, accessible foundation for AI education—one that supports both workforce readiness and the future of teaching in an increasingly AI-driven world.
