Elon Musk’s SpaceX has entered into a strategic collaboration with AI coding startup Cursor, with an agreement that includes an option to acquire the company for $60 billion later this year.
The partnership is focused on developing next-generation artificial intelligence systems for coding and broader knowledge work. Cursor, known for its AI-powered software development tools, will work closely with SpaceX to build more advanced and scalable AI solutions, leveraging the growing demand for automation in software engineering.
As part of the deal structure, SpaceX has the flexibility to either proceed with the full acquisition or alternatively pay around $10 billion for the ongoing collaboration if the buyout does not materialize.
The collaboration is expected to significantly enhance Cursor’s capabilities by providing access to large-scale computing infrastructure, while also strengthening SpaceX’s position in the competitive AI landscape. The move aligns with the company’s broader push into artificial intelligence through its integration with xAI, as it seeks to compete more effectively with major players in the AI coding and developer tools space.
Cursor has emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI startups, gaining traction among developers for its ability to automate complex coding tasks. The partnership with SpaceX could accelerate its growth further by combining its software expertise with high-performance computing resources.
