Google Expands AI Infrastructure in India to Strengthen Digital and Data Sovereignty

Google has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and investments in India, reinforcing the country’s digital and AI sovereignty. The tech giant is deploying its advanced AI Hypercomputer architecture, powered by Trillium TPUs, to enable Indian businesses and public sector organisations to train and operate Gemini models locally. This initiative marks a pivotal step in strengthening India’s AI ecosystem and ensuring that innovation aligns with national data residency and compliance frameworks.

“India’s developer community, vibrant startup ecosystem, and leading enterprises are embracing AI with incredible speed,” said Saurabh Tiwary, Vice President and General Manager of Cloud AI at Google.

To address India’s surging demand for AI capabilities, Google is rolling out a suite of localized tools designed to meet sovereignty and data protection requirements. Among them is Gemini 2.5 Flash, which is now available to regulated Indian customers, supporting on-premise and local machine learning operations. Additionally, Document AI and real-time grounding on Google Maps have been tailored to suit India’s unique digital and infrastructural context. For the first time, Google’s most advanced Gemini models will be hosted in India, with early testing already underway — a move that ensures full data residency support and enhances accessibility for Indian enterprises.

In a parallel effort to boost India’s AI research and innovation landscape, Google Cloud and Google DeepMind have joined hands with IIT Madras to power the launch of Indic Arena, a project developed by AI4Bharat. This platform aims to create a standardized benchmarking ecosystem for evaluating how AI models perform across India’s diverse linguistic landscape. “A critical part of this is having a neutral, standardised benchmark to understand how models are performing across our many languages,” said Mitesh Khapra, Associate Professor at IIT Madras.

Reaffirming Google’s commitment to India’s growing AI ecosystem, Tiwary added, “We’re committed to bringing our latest AI advancements to India faster than ever, with the controls and capabilities that reflect the country’s unique business and cultural context.”

With this expansion, Google is not only accelerating AI adoption but also aligning its innovations with India’s long-term vision of digital autonomy, innovation, and inclusive technological growth.
