In a landmark move underscoring its growing influence in the AI landscape, Anthropic has announced a massive expansion of its partnership with Google Cloud, with plans to deploy one million Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) by 2026. The deal, reportedly worth tens of billions of dollars, marks one of the largest cloud infrastructure commitments in the industry to date.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said the collaboration reflects the “strong price-performance and efficiency Anthropic has experienced with TPUs over several years,” reaffirming the companies’ partnership that began in early 2023. The expansion highlights Anthropic’s confidence in Google’s custom-designed chips and its commitment to scaling the Claude family of AI models.
Anthropic’s broader multi-platform strategy ensures it remains flexible and hardware-agnostic. In addition to Google’s TPUs, the company continues to leverage Amazon’s Trainium chips and NVIDIA GPUs, maintaining deep partnerships across the AI ecosystem. This approach supports the company’s goal of advancing model innovation while balancing cost, scalability, and compute diversity.
The AI startup’s rapid growth has been remarkable — serving over 300,000 business customers, with large enterprise accounts generating more than $100,000 in annual revenue increasing sevenfold over the past year. Anthropic’s Claude models, including Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Claude 4.5 Haiku, and the flagship Claude 4.1 Opus, have become widely adopted across industries, powered by Google Cloud’s robust TPU infrastructure.
Google’s latest Ironwood TPUs, part of the seventh generation, are also being used to train Gemini AI models, underscoring their critical role in large-scale AI training. With Google holding a 14% equity stake in Anthropic, this expanded collaboration not only strengthens the financial and technical ties between the two companies but also solidifies their joint position in the global AI race.
The move places Anthropic among the select few AI companies operating at such massive compute scale, rivaling OpenAI and other leading players. As the competition to build faster, more efficient AI models intensifies, Anthropic’s partnership with Google Cloud signals a bold bet on performance, infrastructure, and long-term AI innovation.
