Global shipments of personal computers (PCs) increased by 3% in the second quarter, driven by the demand for AI-capable devices, according to preliminary data from research firm IDC released on Tuesday. The total number of PC shipments reached 64.9 million units for the three months ending in June, marking the second consecutive quarter of growth after two years of decline.
IDC reported that Apple experienced the most significant growth among global PC makers, with shipments rising by 20.8% from the second quarter of 2023. Acer Group followed with a 13.7% increase. This growth suggests a recovery in the PC market following a period of reduced orders after the pandemic-driven surge in purchases.
Ryan Reith, group vice president at IDC’s Worldwide Device Trackers, noted that the PC market is benefiting from the excitement around AI as well as a commercial refresh cycle. “The buzz is clearly around AI, but a lot is happening with non-AI PC purchasing to make this mature market show signs of positivity,” he said.
Despite this overall growth, weak results in China continued to impact the market negatively. IDC mentioned that excluding China, global shipments increased by more than 5% year-over-year in the quarter. China’s Lenovo Group maintained the highest market share at 22.7%, followed by HP at 21.1%.
